Champion For Kids, End Summer Hunger

Homeschooling my boys has been one of the most rewarding and bonding experiences I have ever had. I made a commitment to do more than teach my boys Math, English, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. I want to instill in them how important it is to be responsible, good hearted citizens and leave lasting impressions of how they view and treat society. Yesterday we participated in a simple service project. We are helping to be part of the change this Summer in the fight against hunger.

My family is participating in the Champions for Kids Odwalla Hunger in Summer Campaign. As exciting as it is that Summer is coming and school will be out for a couple of months, the idea that some children are going to lose access to meals is stunning. Low-income families will be stretching their food budget to provide additional meals for their children and only 1 out 6 low income families will keep receiving free meals during the summer months.

To get started we made a trip to WalMart to purchase Odwalla products. We are fans of Odwalla, I love the Original Super Food Smoothies. But since they didn’t have the non-perishable kids drinks at my WalMart we went on to find something more shelf friendly.

We headed to the produce section to grab a few of the Odwalla kids bars. I let the boys decide on the flavors they would like to donate.

With enough boxes in hand we made our way though the store for a few more items and to the checkout to finish up our project.

I had my boys help purge our pantry of non-perishable items we could donate to our local food bank. This also made for a great lesson in how we grocery shop and how fortunate we are to have a pantry full of food to choose from each day. I want my children to see that not everyone has the luxury of going into a stocked pantry whenever they are hungry.

We then made a trip to our local food pantry to give our donation courtesy of Champions for Kids.

We live in a small town where our food pantry is not as “stocked” as it could be. The volunteers where thrilled to see the boys show up with donations for their community. We learned that anyone in our area could walk in no questions asked and pick up necessities. From personal hygeine products, food to books. Our food pantry is in great need of items year round and as the volunteers reminded us, that the summer becomes even busier and less stocked.

What’s your cleaner of choice? I have tried so many products for cleaning around my home. I have a cabinet full of products that are half full. I would rather have one great multi-cleaner for cleaning surfaces. See how replenish multi-surface cleaner fared in my home.

Most cleaners are filled with mostly water. How many of the ingredients are for cleaning, though? I have been sharing ways to reduce reuse and recycle and today I have a new product that will help you do just that. Replenish is a an empty reusable bottle – reusable so you never have to throw it away, just keep refilling it with water. By screwing on a concentrated pod and giving the bottle a good squeeze to fill up the reservoir you are able to clean, just about anything. The concentrated pod will allow for three bottles of replenish – just refill with water and squeeze when it run out.

Replenish Facts:

Mixing Replenish Concentrate Pods at home uses 90% less plastic, oil and CO2 emmissions versus pre-mixed cleaners.

Replenish is made from 98% plant-based ingredients that are non-toxic to aquatic life.

Free of any or all solvents or neutralizing compounds that contain amines, glycol ethers, ketones, and esters, which are often sources of odors.

The cleaner is people, pet and planet safe. No harsh chemicals.

I have gone replenish only in my home for two weeks. Cleaning granite, cabinets, dining table, glass, mirrors and even a spill on my tiled floor. It’s an easy to use formula that does’t leave a strong odor, but a light fresh scent. It’s also not soapy and doesn’t leave a film on surfaces.

One downfall is that replenish is not easily found in stores. The nearest to me is over 100 miles away. The upside is you can purchase replenish online.

SearsStyle Summer Essentials

I always start a new season off with essentials. I love a great trend and adding new pieces to mix into my old wardrobe. With summer nearly here, I went on a search for Summer Beach Essentials at Sears. A few key pieces are always in order and even on a small budget you can be a fashionista.

On my list this summer for must haves, a new swimsuit, a beach bag, sandals and a cover up.

I left the boys with dad, for a little retail therapy. Sears has an entire section dedicated to swim wear and accessories so I was in for a treat finding everything I wanted in one place. I tried on quite a few styles of swim wear, from bikinis to one piece suits. Sears has styles for all body shapes so it was easy for me to pull the styles that made sense for my body type. I wanted to move away from a two piece but I still didn’t want to fully cover up. I want comfort, cute and don’t want to risk any embarrassing moments. I am more than likely chasing after one of the boys at one point in our outings so mishap’s can’t be an option. We take the boys to the beach, spend countless days at the lake with our friends and also get Schlitterbahn passes every summer, which means I get lots of use out of summer swimwear.

After a few realizations on what my thirty year old mom of three body could handle. I found a few great summer essentials from searStyle that I couldn’t live without.

A maxi dress by bongo on sale for $14.99. Maxi dresses are the most comfortable dress you will ever own. It hides imperfections, looks chic and also works perfectly as a cover up. Sometimes our trip to the beach starts with a stop at a seaside restaurant. What better way to be beach ready and lunch appropriate than in a maxi. I love this green maxi dress with brown beading by bongo. It’s a fun summer essential that is very versatile.

A bold striped monokini swimsuit by Joe Boxer for $15.99. I love that it covers me up without being to revealing. The peak-a-boo cutouts still show enough skin to look young – I will forever be young – right?!

Braided thong Sandals by Studio S on sale $9.60. I love these sandals with gold hardware.

Mondoni handbag in bright blue with cutout $30. The bag is perfect for the beach. It holds all of my essentials, and beach towel.
