What Do you want to be Monday? Featuring Dino Dan

Featuring Dino Dan

dino dan

One of my favorite parts of homeschooling is teaching my kids outside the box.  We aren’t committed to the structure of 45 minute subjects and we get to add in all kinds of fun, interesting and hands on curriculum.  Monday’s are our favorite learning days.  I was inspired by the book Earn it, Learn it and we put our own spin on the entire concept.  Monday afternoons are dedicated to  ”What do you want to be, when you grow up?” .   Last week I received the new Dino Dan 2 pack kit of Dinosaurs and when I saw that the toys are designed by world renowned Italian paleontologist and geologist Dr. Stefano Piccini. I was intrigued to have a Paleontology day.  My boys enjoy pretend play and love getting to be someone else for a few hours.

My huge Dinosaur fans loved that digging up dinosaur bones is an actual job.  So naturally they were enthused to have a day dedicated to all things Dinosaurs.  The educational line is made of museum quality replicas so teaching, learning and playing is a breeze.  Head over to Dino Dan online and play games, dig up bones just like a Paleontologist does using their tools and get the facts in the Dino Lab.  I highly reccomend the site for young and old my 11 year old and 3 year old enjoyed the site and it has a lot to offer.   Keep an eye out for  other activities we did, to correlate with “What Do You Want to be Monday?” coming to the blog next week.

Earn it learn it Teaching the Value of Money

Earn It Learn It

In today’s world it’s harder to teach your child the value of money.  Balancing allowances has changed from when I was a kid.  Do you struggle with teaching your children the value of money?  As an adult we only get paid for working as children the idea’s sometimes muddy and children get paid for making their bed or taking out the trash.  But are those the life lessons we want to teach our children.  Alisa Weinstein believes that we must teach our children to “Earn it and Learn it”.  A simple plan that is cleverly taught in her new book.

The Earn My Keep allowance program is designed to entertain the idea of, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”.   I ask my boys that every now and then.  When I was a little girl, my answer was always a Pediatrician.  Because I loved kids, still do and probably why I realized having them was a little more my style rather than diagnosing sick ones.  Weinstein teaches you how to venture into a world of exploring careers with your children in a plan that working for your money is rewarding.

My sons and I have been following Wiensteins plan as part of our homeschooling.  We have learned skills and ventured into new learning environments.  For example we studied the job of an Urban Planner today.  What does the job consist of?  What does it take to become an Urban Planner? What careers cross paths with an Urban Planner? A day in the life of an Urban Planner?  The book is full of careers, ideas and implementing teaching within each career.  It makes learning fun and implements the way these people make money.  Not by doing their bed, but by enhancing our community through different projects.

Earn it, Learn it by Alisa T. Weinstein will cleverly show you the way to effectively teach your child the value of money, work and is the perfect bonding experience.

Fall Back into School Bucket List

Ready,Set, Go!  Who’s ready to say hello to a new school year?  As summer slips through our fingers,  I know in a few short months the hot summer and carefree days will be a distant memory.  And we will soon be bustling through day by day.  Our family is entering a new chapter of our lives, the world of homeschooling.  We are all nervous and excited at the same time.  The decision was a very hard decision to make, but as a family we all decided it is the path we want to go down.  I have been preparing for months and getting as much information to make the transition for myself and eleven year old as smooth as possible.

Fall Back into School Bucket List

1. Create a personal work space, a place they enjoy spending time at.

2. A new haircut.  Just because we wont be heading into a school full of kids every morning doesn’t mean they can’t start off the year with a fresh look.

3. Take a First day of school picture.  We love comparing how much they change over the school year.

4. Buy school supplies when you find awesome deals.

5. Plan 2 outings/field trips a month to a place we have never been.

6. Give each child a journal.  A creative outlet to write their personal thoughts, wants, wishes, regrets, etc.

7. Make learning fun

8.Have a curriculum but don’t feel bound to it.

9.Set goals that you want accomplished by the end of year.

10.Schedule each week in advance.

Tomorrow we are focusing on the color Brown, shapes and farm animals.  Very fitting because we are hitting the Rodeo Friday for DJ’s 1st birthday.  The petting zoo, pig races and a little funnel cake is in our future.

BJ is learning to use his scissors and cutting pieces of foam, felt , bubble wrap and cotton.  We are going to glue the pieces onto {all brown shades of} paint samples that we will turn into something like this.  This will be a sensory flip book for DJ.

Shape tracing is a great quiet time project.  When I need a moment to get lunch and dinner going I pull out the markers and laminated sheets.  These are easy to make and inexpensive.   Print clever poster designs at an online printer who can get the work done quickly.  Have random shapes and letters printed out that can be used with dry erase markers.

Farm animal fun is on the agenda.  A great way to use up all the toilet paper and paper towel rolls.  This is a fun project to get the little ones creative brain going.  Get out a few wiggly eyes, pipe cleaners and odds and ends.  There is no right or wrong when creating your animals.
