Start New Buy Fresh, my journey to a dream home.
In 2005 my husband and I started to discuss the idea of building our dream home. We wanted to move from our 12 year old home to a home custom built for us. I was excited by the opportunity to make our home just how we wanted it. I started the homework of putting all of our ideas into a style board. We spent a year saving money and talking about home design, we would pull photos from magazines, the internet and visited open houses. Our dreams and wants where becoming narrowed down to what we really wanted and needed for our growing family.
We weighed our options to decide if this was a decision we where ready to make. We were in love with our older home but not in love with the endless to do list and repairs that we where constantly having to do. We had plenty of very costly set backs during our first year in our home. The water heater needed to be replaced with a bigger one, a major leak coming from our second story shower, our alarm system stopped working and needed rewiring and our garage door broke and needed to be completely replaced. The idea that we were constantly having new things to replace made us yearn for a new home. We met with area builders and were easily impressed at how simple it is to get the ball rolling and make the leap to designing our perfect custom home. Within a year we have gone from an empty 5 acre lot to a custom built dream home with all of our special touches that we couldn’t find in an older home.
Our newly built dream home has allowed us to trade the repair and update list into a want-to-do list. With no repairs or remodels needed in our new home we can concentrate on additions. Customizing the perfect closet, getting high ceilings and a half bath was half the fun. I love the fact that we customized our favorite spaces for our needs. Starting off with a new energy efficient home means we are saving money from the start. We have energy efficient appliances and energy saving light bulbs, something we had no idea we were wasting hundreds of dollars on in our old non-efficient home.
