Growing up my brother and I spent hours outdoors every single day. Even in bad weather we would play under one of the neighborhood kids carport. We rode our bikes, climbed trees, played tag… some days we just sat outside on the grass no one said a word we just sat with our thoughts and listened to the world around us. The big wide world had so much to offer us the birds chirped, the squirrels tight roped on branches and we watched.
Fast forward to now and my boys lives seem so much different. We encourage them to spend time outdoors, but having to encourage them is what gets me. They are so preoccupied with their tablets, gaming systems and smart tv that life passes them by. When I was their age none of those time suckers existed. The moment we where home from school we raced to finish our homework and get outdoors. I embrace their love for electronics, with the help of great websites and apps like Peep & the Big Wide World a tool that helps preschoolers develop science inquiry skills that promote learning about the world around them. Peep & the Big Wide World is a bilingual website that launched November 2014, it also offers a mobile-friendly digital hub to engage using fun activities to help preschoolers exploration of math and science. The educational content is perfect for homeschooling and what I like to incorporate into our after school life.
The one-of a kind online professional development and year-long curricula with six, 3-week long units provides effective resources to integrate science and math into curriculum and boost confidence in teaching these subjects in both English and Spanish.
The boys and I spent sometime outdoors with our dog Tex. We sat in the grass and listened to the big wide world around us. Read books and discovered how the seasons change, colors, shapes and sounds around us. It’s amazing how quiet yet loud the world is. Our own yard is filled with things to explore.
