My life sometimes has me questioning my self-worth and the ability to see real progress in my day-to-day. For instance some days it takes major concentration to even recall if I ate lunch.  I can easily forget just how much I get done in a day. I am a master at multi-tasking, but horrible at remembering when I last deep cleaned the upstairs bathrooms. It’s my goal in 2020 to stay organized and utilize my new Erin Condren Planner to help me stay accountable and motivated. 2020 goals_ How To Stay Organized With A Life Planner

How To Stay Organized With A Life Planner Hourly Layout

The Erin Condren Coiled Life Planner comes in three different layout options. I chose the hourly layout to allow me to block out my time and get detailed with keeping a daily diary.  The hourly planner can really help you stay accountable and track just about everything. The planner can also be designed in vertical or horizontal daily layouts. These are less detail-oriented, but still, allow you to keep track of daily important memos.

Use Colored Pens

Designate colors to help keep track of everything you have going on in your life. Using colored pens will help you categorize and simplify your planner in a detailed fashion so that you can easily track it. I use a multitude of different colors in my planner. While I may change my color-coding, I like to stick with the same color key all week to help maintain the flow. This weeks color key looks like this:

Red: Expenses

I use a red pen to keep track of all my money going out each day. I keep track of every dollar that I spend, bills being paid out, gas, eating out, etc. In the hourly section of my planner, I will break down to the penny every dollar and what it is being spent on. Groceries, gas, date night…  Using a red pen helps me clearly see what I spend each day. I add up up my daily spending and keep it tracked at the bottom of each day’s row. This helps me curb my spending.

Blue: Kids Schedule

Extracurricular activities, homeschool plans, party invites.

Purple: Work and important events.

Work from home, I like to carve out time where I am efficient in working and not sidetracking on social media.

Orange: To-Do list items.

Anything I know I need to get done I keep at the top of my hourly day and add to it as I go while checking off what I have accomplished.

Green: Cleaning

This is where I keep track of the deep cleaning that I have done and need to get done. Bathrooms, washing bedding, appliances, baseboards… I also keep track of yearly maintenance items.

Pink: Food Diary

Staying accountable for what I am eating and keeping up with a balance of healthy and cheat meals. Tracking my water consumption.

Brown: Payday

I have a handful of sources of income. To watch what comes in and is still pending in pay, I keep track so that I can circle back and account for pending payments on their due dates.

Plan Where You Work

My planner is what my husband calls my bible. It sits on my desk open to the current month and I am constantly adding to it. I use a highlighter to cross through the previous day and move items to the next day if they are still pending. If I am doing work-related things outside of my desk the planner usually joins me. It holds every important item I have and keeps me organized, so it is important that I have it in the space I frequent.

  1. You are so organized and with homeschooling and blogging work I can see how you need a good planner to keep track of everything. Outlining your financial debits and credits is a good idea we all should follow.

  2. I love the idea of using a planner, but I haven’t committed to it yet. I like that you shared your color-coding key because things like that can really trip me up.

  3. I really need something like this in my life. Good to see visuals to what your goals are and if you are making progress. Must have!

  4. I would love to see how your planner works. Using the colored ink. I have a EC too, it is my 7th one and I adore them. I work every year at finding the best way to use it though.

  5. I have a “bible” too. I adore my Erin Condren. My little one always tries to “help” me with my organization because I also use colored pens. No way! This is for me only.

  6. I was looking for a great organizer but couldn’t find one at my local store! I love this planner. I think it would be perfect for me.
