It’s the dog days of summer and Tex has been feeling the heat right along with us. As a seasoned pet mom I am sharing my tips to keep your pet safe this summer. In a blink of an eye our puppy turned into a gorgeous big guy. He loves unconditionally and we would do anything to keep him safe this season. We have learned just how important it is to treat your pet just like you would a toddler who is full of energy, but still can’t fully communicate.

Keep your pet cool

1. Avoid outings during the scorching heat as much as possible. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best time to enjoy the outdoors.

2. Keep a pet pool outdoors with your pet if they will be spending time outdoors.

3. Hydration is key even indoors, always have fresh water available.

4. Never leave your pet alone in the car. Even the quickest errand can prove to be fatal. Avoid it and leave your pet home in a cool place.

Keep your pet occupied

5. Pet toys are good distractions for a bored pet who is stuck indoors. We also have  a couple of pet beds to keep Tex from using the furniture as a comfortable spot.

6. Keep shoes and other chewable items out of reach from your pet. You don’t want your favorite shoes missing a strap or worse obstructing your pets insides.

7. Go on plenty of potty breaks to avoid accidents and bored pet syndrome. Just a five-minute walk every so often will curb boredom.

8. Avoid using crates for long periods during the day. Short trips away will help your dog learn to crate train. More importantly you want to avoid an ramped up pet who is full of energy from sitting in a crate all day.  We use dog gates and contain our big guy to one room when we are away for long periods.

Keep your pet safe near water

9. Always use a life vest when your pet will be in the water. Even if your pet is the best swimmer.

10. For play in the water use brightly colored floating toys that can be found easily.

11. Don’t feed your pet for at least an hour after swimming and playing outdoors. Allow him time to calm down, cool off and  hydrate.
