Nurturing Your Child’s Mental Health During Summer: Essential Tips for Moms

My role as a mom is to prioritize my child’s mental health and well-being. As my kids enter summer we are hitting a big change in our routines and the abundance of free time can pose a big strain on their mental health. Although we need the break from the rigor of school and extra circular activities the slow days can also put them in a funk. I’ve spent the last couple of weeks creating some mindful tips to foster a positive and nurturing environment for my kids mental health this summer.

Create Structure and Routine:

Maintaining a structured routine during summer can provide stability and a sense of security for children. Establish a daily schedule that includes consistent mealtimes, regular sleep patterns, and designated activity blocks. Structure allows children to feel more in control, reducing anxiety and promoting mental well-being.

  • A family calendar is the backbone of our family, everyone knows to check the calendar to see what’s happening in our lives.
  • For those lazy summer days, I have a breakfast, lunch, and dinner time planned for 9AM, 12:30PM, and 6:30PM.

Encourage Physical Activity:

Physical activity has numerous mental health benefits for children. Encourage your child to engage in outdoor activities such as swimming, biking, or simply playing in the park. Regular exercise boosts mood, reduces stress, and improves sleep quality. Consider planning family outings that involve physical activity, promoting bonding and a healthy lifestyle.

  • Days at home means we can hangout in the pool and take after dinner walks.
  • Taking the kids out for family picnics and spending afternoons out to fill some of our days.

Stimulate Creative Expression:

Encourage your child’s creative expression as a way to support their emotional well-being. Provide them with art supplies, craft materials, or musical instruments. Engaging in creative activities allows children to process their emotions, explore their imagination, and develop a sense of self-confidence. Consider organizing regular family art projects or storytelling sessions to enhance the bonding experience.

  • Check your local library for free activities throughout summer. We have found some great outside the box activities for our older kids.

Foster Social Connections:

Summer offers ample opportunities for children to connect with peers and build friendships. Encourage social interaction by arranging playdates, enrolling your child in summer camps, or participating in community events. Socializing enhances children’s social skills, boosts self-esteem, and combats feelings of isolation or loneliness.

  • We have scheduled out Vacation Bible School days and summer baseball to keep the kids schedule active.

Limit Screen Time:

While technology can have its benefits, excessive screen time can negatively impact a child’s mental health. Set clear boundaries and establish screen time limits. Encourage alternative activities such as reading books, engaging in outdoor play, or pursuing hobbies. By reducing screen time, children can develop healthier habits, improve focus, and enhance their overall well-being.

We are trying out the idea of working for our screen time. 30 minutes of chores each day, earns you 30 minutes of screen time. Clearing out the dishwasher, putting away laundry, dusting the house, taking out the trash, yard work…

Practice Mindfulness and Relaxation:

Introduce mindfulness and relaxation techniques to help your child manage stress and promote emotional balance. Teach deep breathing exercises, guided imagery, or simple meditation techniques. Engaging in mindfulness activities together can also strengthen the parent-child bond and create a calm and harmonious environment.

Redirect stressful situations between siblings by having them take a 15 minute break from reality.

  • Sit quietly with one child in silence and play relaxing music for 15 minutes.
  • Take them to find a shaded area with a book and read outside for 20 minutes.
  • Take a quiet walk together, just enjoying the peace of the moment.

Communicate:

Pay attention to your child’s emotional well-being and create an open and supportive space for communication. Encourage them to express their feelings and concerns, and actively listen without judgment. Validate their emotions and provide guidance when needed. Regularly check in with your child to ensure they feel heard and supported.

It’s important to nurture and safeguard our children’s mental health. If we can provide a foundation were they feel supported and comfortable we can help foster a relationship where they understand how important their mental health is. With these essential tips for kids to get through the summer we can truly provide a safe space for them to build good habits.
